Catalog Description:
This course addressing marketing efforts and strategy in the context of industries utilizing sport in their product and service offerings. Prerequisite: BA 310
Course Goal and Objectives:
Students are to learn the principles and theory utilized in sports marketing, and develop the skills and understanding needed for successful participation in and analysis of sports marketing opportunities. Upon completion of the course, students are to have a working knowledge of sports marketing (learning outcome = ¿describe, define, and identify sports marketing principles¿), are to understand the tools and skills involved in sports marketing (learning outcome = ¿demonstrate and apply these tools and skills¿), and are to be able to evaluate sports marketing efforts (learning outcome = ¿assess and choose appropriate efforts¿).
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
This course utilizes a very timely and popular industry (sports) as a context to assist students in better understanding marketing activities and strategy, and allows WOU students the opportunity to receive a foundation course in an industry that is the source of often-sought-after post-graduation opportunities. The course will be part of the HPE/BUS sport management minor. The proposed course has already been offered as a BA 477 course and generated substantial interest.
Faculty and facilities needed:
The course can be offered with existing faculty and facilities.
Brief Course outline:
The course addresses the four domains of sports marketing (theme-based, product-based, alignment-based, and sport-based), in the context of sponsorships, events (leveraging, activation, and evaluation), promotion (endorsements, naming rights), distribution and facilities management, and product-based activities.
