First term offered : Spring 2012
Course Prefix&Number Descriptive Title Credits/Hours
H 353 Thesis Development 1 - 2

Abbreviation for Class Schedule(20 spaces)
Thesis Development
Catalog Description:
Introductory, developmental work related to the Honors Thesis/Senior Project, including literature review, timeline, and outline. Enrollment limited to students in the Honors Program.
Course Goal and Objectives:
This course complements and expands upon the work students complete in H 303, Honors Thesis Orientation. In H 353, they will begin completing the necessary planning and introductory elements of a major project, including the literature review and outlining. The ultimate goal is to ensure a more smooth transition from junior to senior years -- this course and H 303 are taken during junior year -- and to produce better Honors theses as a result.
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
Alignment the thesis process more closely with other WOU departments as well as other Honors Programs. The current structure, in which students take only one class in fall term of their junior year, produces a rough transition to completion.
Faculty and facilities needed:
None
Brief Course outline:
A hybrid course, combining in-class and online instruction, H 353 will move students through the necessary steps for successfully turning their thesis proposal (completed fall term in H 303) into an Honors Thesis. The first 3-4 weeks of class will be devoted to completing a literature review. This will be followed by 3-4 weeks of work refining one's focus, if necessary, and completing a detailed outline and timeline. The final weeks of class will be spent drafting the opening 10-15 pages.
