Ch 412 | Inorganic Chemistry of the Environment | 4 - |
Abbreviation for Class Schedule(20 spaces) Inorg Chem Environ |
Current Course Description: A study of the basic principles of inorganic chemistry and the main properties and reaction chemistry of inorganic elements and compounds within the framework of the periodic table. Not sequential with CH 411. Prerequisites: CH 223, MTH 252, PH 213 or consent of instructor |
New Course Description: This course uses the periodic variations in fundamental atomic properties to predict and explain the chemical behavior of classes of inorganic compounds with special applications to the environment. Not sequential with CH 411. Three lectures (3 hours) and one lab (1 credit). Prerequisites: CH 223, MTH 252, PH 213 or consent of instructor |
Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): Historically, this course has covered the elements of descriptive inorganic chemistry with in a framework of environmental applications. The course needs should be renamed to reflect this focus, and it would be logical to include it in an Environmental Option to the Chemistry major. |
Students/Program affected: Ch 412 currently serves as an elective in the Chemistry major as well as the Environmental Studies minor. There will be no impact on students majoring in other options of the chemistry major such as the traditional major since it is one possible course available for completing the requirement of 6 hours of upper division chemistry electives. The effect on Environmental Studies minor students is the addition of one credit hour. However, these students are required to complete 6-9 credit hours of electives so this change would impose no burden upon those students. |

Comments: The proposal is mute on the need for new/additional laboratory facilities beyond those in existence or those that will be located in the new science annex. My approval is made with the provision that the course will continue to rely on facilities that exist within one or other of those buildings.
