Catalog Description:
Provides practical experience in the roles and responsibilities of the library media specialist at the secondary level. Students receive instruction through observation and guidance from an on-site mentor library media specialist and a WOU faculty supervisor. Note: Lib 609 must be taken twice: once at the elementary level, and once at the secondary level. Note: Prerequisites for LIB 609 are: 1) obtaining a passing score on the ED /Library Media PRAXIS test, and 2) completing at least the 12 credits of LIB 670, LIB 671, LIB672, & LIB 673 towards the endorsement.
Course Goal and Objectives:
¿ Experience the application of theoretical concepts from Ed Media courses in an authentic school library setting ¿ Become familiar with the responsibilities of the school library media specialist ¿ Become familiar with the role of the school library media center within the school ¿ Develop skills for teaching information-related content within a library setting ¿ Develop planning and organizational skills appropriate for managing a school library ¿ Observe how the school library media specialist interacts with students, teachers, and administrators within the school setting
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
The Ed Media Endorsement has been revised and updated. This course supports the standards from the American Library Association/American Association of School Librarian¿s Standards for Initial Programs for School Library Media Specialist Preparation (2003) which is based on the national guidelines for school library media programs from Information Power; Building Partnerships for Learning (1998). Faculty and facilities needed:
This Practicum will be supervised by a qualified adjunct who is an active or retired k12 Library Media Specialist.
Brief Course outline:
Practicum Topics ¿ Secondary ¿ 90 hours of contact time -- Each practicum student will complete a minimum of 90 hours of practicum experiences in a middle or high school library. ¿ Reflections on your activities, observations, thoughts and reactions to your practicum experience. ¿ Compare and contrast at least two Media Programs ¿ Three-way conference with mentor and university supervisor.
