Catalog Description:
This course explores the theoretical foundations and practice of ethical communication examined in a variety of communication contexts. Specifically, our analysis seeks identification of ethical issues underlying all communication behavior, and application of those issues to contemporary and classical examples of communicative behavior. Over the course of the term, students utilize this information to develop clear and appropriate ethical standards and practices in communication.
Course Goal and Objectives:
Students will learn and apply subject-relevant terminology, concepts, and theories in order to 1. Recall key terminology needed for understanding course materials; 2. Recognize application of and examples of key concepts at work in communication situations; 3. Apply theoretical concepts to actual and simulated situations; 4. Perform theory-appropriate analyses of conflict situation to develop appropriate management strategies.
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
Communication Ethics represents the department¿s commitment to ethical communication by students. A course dedicated to ethical communication practices underscores the importance of ethical behavior. Informal discussions with students indicated an interest in the course and its subject matter. Enrollment in this course, taught under temporary course approvals, has been high (closed or overenrolled).

No additional faculty or facilities are needed. This course has been taught on temporary course approvals and is part of the department¿s course rotation.
Brief Course outline:
COM 370: Communication Ethics Fall 2011 Dr. Nick Backus HSS 115 503-838-8851 backus.wou@gmail.com Office Hours: Mon/Wed 2-3 and 4-5, Tue/Thur 12:30-1, and by appointment Required textbook: Tompkins, P. S. (2011). Practicing Communication Ethics: Development, Discernment, and Decision Making. Boston: Pearson. Grading breakdown: Test 1 25% Test 2 25% Activity Write-ups 25% Final paper 25% Graded Assignments: Tests: You will have 2 tests, each covering a specific portion of the course. You will NOT have a comprehensive final. These tests will cover all material assigned and discussed in class up to the day of the test. The questions will be of mixed format¿multiple choice, true/false, short answer, etc. You will receive a study guide for each test approximately one week prior to the test. Activity Write-ups: You will engage in several in class activities, including case studies, simulations, and media clips. For each of these activities, you will receive a written assignment. You will have until the next class meeting to complete the work and hand in your final product. You may bring these papers to class on the day they are due or you may email them to me at: backus.wou@gmail.com Final Paper: You will receive a more detailed description of this assignment later in the term. In brief, though, you will design and write-up your own personal code of communication ethics, documenting the appropriateness of your decisions throughout¿what did you decide, why did you decide it, and what is the source of the information justifying your decisions?
