Catalog Description:
This course introduces the students to the roles and responsibilities of a library media teacher focusing on all principles of program administration. Students will examine the development of goals, national and state standards, current issues, ethics and laws, and the effective management of resources.
Course Goal and Objectives:
1. To explore the role of the library media program within the school environment ¿ Allocate, organize, manage and evaluate human, physical and financial resources ¿ Shape roles and responsibilities of the library staff ¿ Use the schedule, space, furnishings & equipment for best learning 2. To define the vision, mission and goals of the library media center 3. To use data analysis to make decisions that ¿ Promote long range strategic program planning ¿ Develop budgets to support program needs ¿ Access program effectiveness and accountability 4. To advocate for strong library media programs with administrators, staff, parents and the community. 5. To access professional resources and organizations to maintain knowledge of current issues, trends in the profession and for professional support 6. To examine legislation, district and library policies and national code of ethics.
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
The Ed Media Endorsement has been revised and updated. This course supports the standards from the American Library Association/American Association of School Librarian¿s Standards for Initial Programs for School Library Media Specialist Preparation (2003) which is based on the national guidelines for school library media programs from Information Power; Building Partnerships for Learning (1998). No additional faculty or facilities needed. Course will be taught by a qualified active or retired K12 Library Media Specialist.
