Catalog Description:
This course focuses on the evaluation, planning, selecting, purchasing and organizing of the library media collection; including print, non-print, electronic resources and equipment. Students will examine current collection issues, including; intellectual freedom, copyright, and the promotion of materials.
Course Goal and Objectives:
¿ Understand the need for and create a policy for both selection and weeding. ¿ Evaluate a collection based on community profile ¿ Find and utilize reviews, booklists and websites to select and purchase materials for a school collection ¿ Design reports to demonstrate library usage ¿ Create book talks, displays and contests to promote library materials to patrons ¿ Recognize threats to intellectual freedom and how to guard against censorship
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
The Ed Media Endorsement has been revised and updated. This course supports the standards from the American Library Association/American Association of School Librarian¿s Standards for Initial Programs for School Library Media Specialist Preparation (2003) which is based on the national guidelines for school library media programs from Information Power; Building Partnerships for Learning (1998). Faculty and facilities needed:
No additional faculty or facilities needed. Course will be taught by a qualified active or retired K12 Library Media Specialist.
Brief Course outline:
¿ Selection Policies: reconsideration policies, criteria for selection, collection evaluation, collection mapping, weeding/de-selection ¿ Professional review and collection resources ¿ Selecting equipment, supplies and services ¿ Acquiring Resources: knowledge and evaluation of publishers, jobbers, subscriptions, vendors ¿ Ordering procedures ¿ Organizing resources: MARC records, descriptive cataloging, classification, processing, records management, circulation, automation and organization of non-cataloged materials ¿ Media formats, including ebooks, ¿Library to Go¿ digital devices ¿ Community Profiles ¿ Cooperative Collection Development
