Current Course Description:
Examines primary processes and principle that form the foundation of literacy K-adult. Applications of these process and principles in varied settings will be explored, as well as the relationship between culture, language, power, identity, and literacy.

New Course Description:
This course examines major theories that form the foundation of literacy K-adult. This course will explore the following: psychological, sociological, and linguistic foundations of the reading/writing process, literacy research and the histories of literacy, language development and acquisition and variations related to cultural and linguistic diversity, as well as the major components of reading such as phonemic awareness, word identification and phonics, vocabulary and background knowledge, fluency, comprehension strategies, and motivation and how they are integrated into being a fluent reader.

Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
The new course description reflects current research and theory in the field as well as the foundational nature of the course.
