Current Course Description: Catalog Description: Introduction to teaching writing in the early childhood and elementary school classroom. Particular emphasis will be placed upon developmental writing with young children, authentic and naturalistic approaches to language and writing, the connection between reading and writing and research-based approaches to feedback and assessment on student writing. Prerequisite: ED230 or ED240.

New Course Description: New Description: Introduction to teaching writing in the early childhood and elementary school classroom. Particular emphasis will be placed upon developmental writing with young children, authentic and naturalistic approaches to language and writing, the connection between reading and writing and research-based approaches to feedback and assessment on student writing. This course involves authentic experiences at a local elementary school. Students enrolled in this course will therefore need to grant Oregon Department of Education permission to conduct a background check. Necessary forms will be completed in class. Prerequisite: ED230 or ED240.

Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): This is a pre-Education Core class. I believe students need to know that they will need a background check in order to complete the coursework before they register.
