Catalog Description:
This course introduces the students to the roles and responsibilities of a library media teacher focusing on all principles of learning and teaching, as outlined in ¬Information Power; Building Partnerships for Learning (1998). Students will examine the principles of teaching information literacy, collaboration with teachers and other members of the learning community, and knowledge of curriculum at the building, district and state level.
Course Goal and Objectives:
¿ Understand and implement national, state and local information literacy standards. ¿ Understand the impact of information literacy instruction on student achievement. ¿ Explore how the library media specialist, in collaboration with the classroom teacher, can integrate information literacy instruction with the classroom curriculum. ¿ Evaluate a variety of information literacy models. ¿ Design instruction that incorporates the use of an information literacy model. ¿ Design instruction and activities to promote literacy and reading.
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
The Ed Media Endorsement has been revised and updated. This course supports the standards from the American Library Association/American Association of School Librarian¿s Standards for Initial Programs for School Library Media Specialist Preparation (2003) which is based on the national guidelines for school library media programs from Information Power; Building Partnerships for Learning (1998). No additional faculty or facilities needed. Course will be taught by a qualified active or retired K12 Library Media Specialist.
