Stage Combat
Catalog Description:
This course covers the history and practical application of Stage Combat as regulated by the Society of American Fight Directors (SAFD). The focus of this course is threefold: foremost is safety, followed by technical proficiency, and emotional investment in the acting of stage violence. Each term that it is offered, this course will focus on one of the weapon styles recognized by the SAFD. Course maybe repeated for credit.
Course Goal and Objectives:
Example: Unarmed Combat This course covers the history and practical application of Unarmed Combat as regulated by the Society of American Fight Directors (SAFD). Unarmed fighting is defined as the theatrical form of fighting that uses the ¿natural weapons¿ of the human body: fists, feet, elbows, knees, etc. rather than weapons. The focus of this course is threefold: safety is our primary concern, followed by technical proficiency, and finally emotional investment in the actions of stage violence (acting!). Mastery of techniques is not enough: you must (and will) be able to preserve your partner¿s comfort and safety, and learn how to incorporate these actions into the acting process. Acting the fight is your final goal. The course will culminate in a three-minute fight scene from scripted literature incorporating all the required moves for the SAFD Skills Proficiency Test in Unarmed Combat. All students will have the opportunity to perform the fight for an SAFD Fight Master and, if they pass, will become recognized as Proficient in Unarmed Combat by the SAFD. See attached overview for other weapons and background material.
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
Stage Combat has been offered on a regular basis as a TA 407 Topics class. Recognizing this class with a regular course number will enable students to use the course to meet degree requirements without encountering the limitation on 407 credits and will also permit a course fee to be charged to cover weapon rental and repair.
