Current Course Description:
History of Ethiopia (from Emperor Haile Selassie's reign in the 1960s thru the socialist regime of Mangistu Haile Mariam), Tanzania under Julius Neyrere, Somalia under Mohammad Said Barre, Uganda (from Milton Obote to Idi Amin), Kenya under Jomo Kenyatta, and Zambia under Kenneth Kaunda.

New Course Description:
This course examines the spread of Islam in Africa and the evolution of Islamic societies in Africa from the Seventh Century to the present. We will explore the historical, religious, cultural, social, and political aspects of the expansion and development of Islam in Africa. We will address both the Islamization of Africa as well as the Africanization of Islam.
