A100 | Art Topics: [subtitle will vary, to describe specific topic] | 2 - |
Abbreviation for Class Schedule(20 spaces) ART TOPIC: various |
Current Course Description: An introduction to select themes, processes and concepts in art of the past and the present for the non-art major. Focuses will include cultural diversity within the arts and a basic understanding of the various media used. |
New Course Description: An introduction to select themes, processes and concepts in art and visual literacy for non-art majors. Topics will rotate, providing specific focus on theory, experience with art mediums, or influences from the past on current practices and issues. May be repeated twice (up to 4 credits total may be applied to LACC) if each section completed covers a different topic. |
Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): This course change proposal, requesting a change from 3 to 2 credits, is part of a larger program change that will shift the credit level of studio art courses. This change will allow students taking art for LACC credits to choose either a 2-credit or a 4-credit course to fulfill Creative Arts LACC requirements, allowing flexibility in meeting existing requirements (9 credits in Creative Arts LACC courses taken in three subject areas.) LACC-designated courses are available for 1, 2, and 3 credits in Theatre, Dance, and Music. With the current proposed changes, LACC designated courses in Art will be available for 2 or 4 credits in studio art and art history courses. This course change proposal is part of a larger reorganization process to shift all studio art courses in the art major from 3 credits to 4 credits. This change will enable students to complete the program efficiently in a four-year degree plan. As a result, the reduced course load will allow students to invest more time per course and increase the potential for greater progress in each subject. This change will also ease the department¿s scheduling grid, and permit increased student access to studio equipment and workspace as students prepare artwork between class sessions. This change in credits will align our program with art programs in both the 4-year universities and 2-year community colleges in Oregon. Students transferring from quarter and/or semester academic programs will typically experience more accurate credit equivalencies with WOU art courses under this proposed system. |
Students/Program affected: Any WOU student taking general education (Liberal Arts Core Curriculum) courses can benefit from this change. Students can earn credit toward LACC requirements with the flexibility to choose an aspect of art of interest to them, as different topics become available. A100 is currently a course that does not fulfill requirements in the art major or studio art minor; this will not change. These special topic A100 courses will not fulfill art major requirements and will remain an LACC course option offered by the Art Department for that purpose. Students are welcome to take these courses out of general interest in the topic if they have fulfilled their CAD-LACC requirements. The credits earned would become part of the student¿s university requirement total, but could not be counted for credit in art major or minor programs. Transfer students: The use of this course by transfer students will be for the purpose of applying 100 level general education credit in Art to the CAD-LACC requirements at WOU. If questions arise, the requested transfer needs to be evaluated by an academic advisor in the art department, on a case-by-case basis as necessary. Any questions about media specific courses transferring as LACC credit should be addressed by the head of the Art Department or by the Creative Arts Division Chair, which is consistent with current practice. For Dean Review only: How and when will the effectiveness of these changes be determined? A100 Special Topics - We will determine the effectiveness of this change to the existing A100 through our current assessment practices, which are reviewed every year during faculty retreats. Upon acceptance of this proposal, we will develop assessment processes including classroom observations, pre- and post-testing given in each topic, and student responses. |
