Catalog Description: This seminar focuses on reading classic texts and groundbreaking recent texts in the field of technology. Readings vary by term, focusing on themes such as media and culture, emerging technologies, technology in education, etc. Students should expect to read 3-5 books each term. May be repeated for credit (different topics) up to 12 credits. |
Course Goal and Objectives: Through readings and class discussions, students will: ¿ Familiarize themselves with controversial topics and well-known authors within the field of educational technology. ¿ Formulate clear arguments and participate in discussions of key issues within the discipline. ¿ Form educated opinions on issues within the discipline and articulate these in writing. |
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): This course will meet elective requirements for the MSED Information Technology program. The class is aligned with ISTE National Educational Technology Standards and the Framework for 21st Century Learning, which form the framework for the MSEd Information Technology program. |

Brief Course outline: Note: the term will be divided into sections for each book. During each section, the following activities will take place: ¿ Read chapters of the book assigned each week. ¿ Prepare discussion questions and facilitate class discussions for assigned chapters (each student will be responsible for specific chapters). ¿ Actively participate in discussions each week. ¿ At the completion of each book, students will prepare a reflection paper identifying key points in the arguments, personal responses to these points, and additional resources that might shed light on the argument. ¿ Final paper due at the end of the course: students will submit a paper articulating their personal philosophy concerning the theme, with references to specific arguments and quotations from the readings for the term. The paper will identify other authors and readings (both books and articles) that can provide additional insights into the questions raised in these books. |
