Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): This course change proposal, requesting a change from 3 to 4 credits, is part of a larger program change that will shift all studio art courses from 3 to 4 credits. This change will align our program with other art programs in Oregon. In efforts to fit our art program into a 4 credit model, we have shifted all of our courses to 2 or 4 credits. A 498 was previously considered to be very ¿heavy¿ for 2 credits; course evaluations have documented complaints for the amount of material required for 2 credits. The art department decided to combine material from A 398 (1) and A 498 (2) to make this course worthy of 4 credits. Justification for raising the course to 4 credits is an added emphasis on research and writing analysis on contemporary issues related to the profession of art. In addition to the heavy writing load of this course, students develop portfolios for professional presentation, prepare a public oral presentation of their portfolio, prepare for mock interviews in chosen profession, and mount an exhibition of their artwork. New material added will be matting, framing, documentation, and hanging of artwork. Professional ethics, contracts, and gallery exhibition will be covered. |
Students/Program affected: Art majors, BFA students. |
