Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): This course change proposal is part of a larger reorganization process to shift all studio art courses from 3 credits to 4 credits. This change will enable students to complete the program efficiently in a four-year degree plan. As a result, the reduced course load will allow students to invest more time per course and increase the potential for greater progress in each subject. This change will also ease the department¿s scheduling grid, and permit increased student access to studio equipment and workspace as students prepare artwork between class sessions. This change in credits will align our program with art programs in both the 4-year universities and 2-year community colleges in Oregon. Students transferring from quarter and/or semester academic programs will typically experience more accurate credit equivalencies with WOU art courses under this proposed system. Justification for changing this course from 3 to 4 credits is that students will be expected to complete 7 project instead of the 4 projects that was previously required. Art students choosing painting as a focus area previously had two terms of Introduction to Painting (A280 and A281). Consolidation of the program has required that much of the content from A281 will be absorbed into A280. Projects that students will be evaluated on include: color mixing, introduction to painting techniques and methods, color theory application to painting methods, observational color mixing/matching, compositional theory, and measure and proportion. (See syllabus for details of projects). Successful completion of projects will require approximately 8-10 hours a week outside of class time, a proportional increase from previous expectations. Our department has observed that students who transfer in from outside institutions into 300-level coursework at WOU are missing key information that we teach in our second introductory level course. Transfer students are typically behind WOU students in understanding of core concepts: this necessitates that we re-teach these concepts to transfer students at the 300-level, duplicating information, and taking individual time away from WOU students. Merging the two introductory level courses will help our university better align itself with other Oregon universities who offer only one introductory course at the 200-level before advancing to the 300-level. |
Students/Program affected: Art major, Studio Art minor, BFA. |
