Catalog Description:
Building on knowledge learned in CJ-426/526, this course introduces students to advanced techniques and software used in the general analysis of crime. Using an actual problem in criminal justice (e.g. drug trafficking, white-collar crime, sexual exploration of children, etc.), students will collect, evaluate, correlate, and describe data related to the problem. Then, using qualitative and/or quantitative methods to analyze their data, students will develop a hypothesis and offer a prediction based on their findings. (Prerequisite CJ-426/526)
Course Goal and Objectives:
Students will learn to synthesize aspects of criminology theory, employ research and statistical methods, and identify, analyze, and solve problems in crime and disorder. By the end of the class, students will become familiar with or able to: ¿ Distinguish between problems and other public safety issues ¿ Understand the theoretical foundations of problem analysis and Problem-Oriented Policing ¿ Use several methods to identify existing and emerging crime problems ¿ Analyze characteristics of crime problems from a data set ¿ Conduct their own qualitative research into the causes of crime problems ¿ Apply creative crime prevention techniques to crime problems ¿ Analyze displacement and diffusion ¿ Describe how the problem-oriented policing process works in a typical police agency
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
