Catalog Description:
Examines technology tools for teaching specific content knowledge at the elementary school level. Explores effective uses of technologies for presenting content, promoting collaboration, encouraging critical thinking, and developing understanding. Includes skills for evaluating appropriate use of technology with young students. Course will focus on specific content areas each term. May be taken multiple times if different content.
Course Goal and Objectives:
¿ Become familiar with controversies surrounding the use of technology with young children and develop a personal philosophy about the use of technology in the elementary classroom ¿ Understand the relationship between technological knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, and content knowledge ¿ Use technology to enhance learning for a targeted age level in target content areas ¿ Develop knowledge and skills to promote digital citizenship ¿ Use technology in the design of meaningful educational activities ¿ Recognize advantages and disadvantages of educational technology tools and products
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
This course will meet elective requirements for the MSED Information Technology program as well as the MAT technology component. The class is aligned with ISTE National Educational Technology Standards and the Framework for 21st Century Learning, which form the framework for the MSEd Information Technology program and underlie the technology requirement for teacher licensure.
