Nature of course request C02008 :

Drop course Undergraduate

Course Prefix & Number Descriptive Title Cr. Hours
A291 Introduction to Sculpture

Justification for dropping the course:
Justification for dropping the course: : The deletion of A 291 is part of a larger program change that will shift all studio art courses from 3 to 4 credits. This change will align our program with other art programs in Oregon. Art students choosing sculpture as a focus area previously had two terms of Introduction to Sculpture (A290 and A291). Consolidation of the program has required that some of the content from A291 will be absorbed into A290. Comparable colleges and universities offer one introductory sculpture course before moving into upper division coursework. Additionally, our department has observed that students who transfer in from outside institutions into 300-level coursework at WOU are missing key information that we teach in our second introductory level course. Transfer students are typically behind WOU students in understanding of core concepts: this necessitates that we re-teach these concepts to transfer students at the 300-level, duplicating information, and taking individual time away from WOU students. Merging the two introductory level courses will help our university better align itself with other Oregon universities who offer only one introductory course at the 200-level before advancing to the 300-level.
Students/Program affected:
Art majors, Art minors, BFA students
