Catalog Description: This one-credit course will explore classroom management issues surrounding the use of technology in the classroom. Students will learn how to set up activities and classroom spaces to maximize productive time with technology. They will learn tips and tricks for managing technology and students in both the classroom and the computer lab. |
Course Goal and Objectives: Through readings, activities, and assignments, students will: ¿ Know how to use advanced planning to avoid issues during technology activities ¿ Learn how to alleviate management issues by teaching skills, articulating expectations, and providing educational handouts ¿ Understand how to arrange the classroom and organize computers to encourage productive use of time and equipment ¿ Know how to make use of students to assist in management of technology ¿ Have a storehouse of tricks for managing technology in a variety of situations ¿ Develop methods for teaching students digital citizenship skills |
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): This course will meet elective requirements for the MSED Information Technology program as well as the MAT technology component. The class is aligned with ISTE National Educational Technology Standards and the Framework for 21st Century Learning, which form the framework for the MSEd Information Technology program and underlie the technology requirement for teacher licensure. |

Brief Course outline: The following topics will be covered in this class: ¿ Introduction to managing technology in the classroom ¿ Advanced planning and backup plans ¿ Addressing management issues through education ¿ Handouts¿when to use them, what to include, and how to design them ¿ Tips and tricks for managing multiple students, with multiple questions, on multiple computers ¿ Using students as assistant technology managers ¿ Arranging technology in the classroom¿classroom setup ¿ Labeling equipment and materials ¿ Setting up the computers to allow for ease of locating and using relevant programs ¿ Communicating with parents ¿ Digital citizenship |
