New Course Description:
Continue work with images, symbols, and their operation in applied print design problems. Consider messages and audience to understand how to position visual communications. Design for multiple page communications using typographic structures, rhythm, and visual flow. Prerequisites: A260, A 320

Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
Added content in this course reflects redistribution of some color theory content from a discontinued foundations course (A 117);, which will be addressed through lectures and projects, as it relates to logo development and typographic readability and expression. Increased justification of and writing on color decisions will be required. Photography content will be addressed in a new exercise or stage of project development, in response to an observed deficiency in past upper division courses and senior portfolios. Typographic structures is already covered in existing course, but will be addressed more rigorously due to removal of A221; students will be required to do more extensive research and writing on the grid development component of the book project. The same book project will also now entail instruction on photo documentation methods, and therefore, increased expectations regarding the professional level of portfolio documentation. This course change proposal is part of a larger reorganization process to shift all studio art courses from 3 credits to 4 credits. This change will enable students to complete the program efficiently in a four-year degree plan. As a result, the reduced course load will allow students to invest more time per course and increase the potential for greater progress in each subject. This change will also ease the department¿s scheduling grid, and permit increased student access to studio equipment and workspace as students prepare artwork between class sessions. This change in credits will align our program with art programs in both the 4-year universities and 2-year community colleges in Oregon. Students transferring from quarter and/or semester academic programs will typically experience more accurate credit equivalencies with WOU art courses under this system.
Students/Program affected:
BA/BS and BFA major and minor studio art program courses offered in the Art Department.
