Current Course Description:

New Course Description:
Introduction to drawing and composition. Practice in the application of medium. Guidance in conveying the illusion of three-dimensions and two-dimensional expression. Student drawings will be based on direct observation as well as linear perspective theory.

Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
Part of this realignment includes the cancellation of three foundation courses from the art curriculum. Critical material from A131 Beginning Drawing Systems and A135 Beginning Life Drawing will be absorbed into A130, justifying the increase in credits. The 4-credit version of A130 will expand to include essential concepts in 3-point linear perspective theory (in addition to 1-point and 2-point linear perspective theory currently taught in A130). Some figure drawing exercises (gesture drawing and portraiture), which previously have been taught in A135 Beginning Life Drawing, will also migrate to A130. Students will have an increased number of homework assignments and will be expected to spend at least 10 hrs/week on homework assignments designed to reinforce and expand upon concepts introduced in 4-credit class. In the 3-credit version of the class, students were expected to spend just 6 hours per week on homework. This course change proposal, requesting a change from 3 to 4 credits, is part of a larger program change that will shift all studio art courses from 3 to 4 credits. This change will align our program with other art programs in Oregon.
