Abbreviation for Class Schedule(20 spaces) INTRO TO PRINTMAKING |
Current Course Description: Part one of an introductory printmaking course designed to acquaint students with relief, monotypes and collagraphy as visually expressive forms. Prerequisites: A 115, A 130 |
New Course Description: An introductory printmaking course designed to acquaint students with basic relief, intaglio, monotype, and screen printing processes, as well as matting and signing practices. Prerequisites: A 115, A 130 |
Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): Justification for changing this course from 3 to 4 credits is that Art students choosing Printmaking as a focus area previously had two terms of Introduction to Printmaking (A270 and A271). Consolidation of the program has required that much of the content from A271 (specifically intaglio drypoint, screenprinting and linoleum relief techniques) will be absorbed into A270. Students will complete 4 printmaking projects per term, instead of the 3 projects that were previously required. Added content will mean that more days of class will be filled with demonstrations and lecture, and the students will be expected to do more of the actual art-making outside of class. Consequently, students will be expected to spend a minimum of four additional hours per week working in the printmaking studio between classes, researching images, developing printing plates, editioning their final images and matting prints. Compressing our two-term 200-level sequences into one course should have another benefit. Our department has observed that students who transfer in from outside institutions into 300-level coursework at WOU are missing key information that we have taught in our second introductory level course. Transfer students are typically behind WOU students in understanding of core concepts: this necessitates that we re-teach these concepts to transfer students at the 300-level, duplicating information, and taking individual time away from students who completed the 200-level intro sequence at WOU, and already know the information. Merging the two introductory level courses will help our university better align itself with other Oregon universities who offer only one introductory course at the 200-level before advancing to the 300-level. This course change proposal, requesting a change from 3 to 4 credits, is part of a larger program change that will shift all studio art courses from 3 to 4 credits. This change will align our program with other art programs in Oregon. |
