Catalog Description: This class will explore ways to use mobile devices such as smart phones and the iPod Touch for educational purposes in the classroom. Students will learn how to locate and evaluate educational applications to download on their devices and to use these applications effectively with students in their classes. They will develop educational content such as podcasts and movies that can be played on mobile devices, and will learn to program their own simple applications that will run on iPhones. |

Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): This course will meet elective requirements for the MSED Information Technology program as well as the MAT technology component. The class is aligned with ISTE National Educational Technology Standards and the Framework for 21st Century Learning, which form the framework for the MSEd Information Technology program and underlie the technology requirement for teacher licensure. |

Brief Course outline: ¿ Explore the features and capabilities of the iPod Touch ¿ Explore the use of the iPod, iPhone, and other mobile devices in education ¿ Discover existing educational content available for teachers and students to download for use on the iPod ¿ Explore current uses of this technology (research recent studies and articles related to iPods in education) ¿ Discuss how current learning theories can inform the use of this technology ¿ Learn how to use a variety of software titles that work with the iPod (iMovie, GarageBand, Xcode, Jing) ¿ Create educational content such as podcasts, movies, and basic iPod applications ¿ Discuss how this technology can be implemented in the classroom (develop a unit of instruction that utilizes the iPod Touch and a number of its features) |
