ADV PRINTMAKING

Current Course Description:

New Course Description:
Individualized advanced study and studio practice of one of the following areas: relief; serigraphy; intaglio; monoprints; or lithography. Research projects and/or presentations. Prerequisite: A 470

Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
Justification for changing this course from 3 credits to 4 credits is that more information will be covered in each course. Some of the information previously taught in A271 (Intro to Printmaking) will be distributed across the 300-level and 400-level printmaking sequences. Content in the intermediate/advanced printmaking curriculum cycles on a rotating schedule, so it is impossible to list specific project changes for each course number, but each course will be modified to increase the demands on the students in one or more of the following ways each term: a.) students will have an extra assignment to research a contemporary issues in printmaking and present findings in a written research paper. b.) students will have the extra requirement to explore a technique in printmaking related to the method studies this term and present findings in an oral/visual presentation. c.) students will be expected to complete 4 projects per term, instead of the 3 projects that were previously required. d.) students will be expected to complete prints of a more challenging scope than were previously required (e.g. larger print sizes, multi-color prints instead of black and white, prints of greater complexity). Each term, all 400-level students are required to a.) research a printmaking technique related to the method covered that term, and b.) perform a demonstration for the 300-level students. To further justify the additional credit earned for the class, all students will be expected to spend, at minimum, an additional 4 hours/week (outside of classes) developing sketches, proofing and printing plates, matting work, etc. This course change proposal, requesting a change from 3 to 4 credits, is part of a larger program change that will shift all studio art courses from 3 to 4 credits. This change will align our program with other art programs in Oregon.
Students/Program affected:
