Catalog Description:
This one-credit course will explore the advantages and disadvantages of reusable educational content known as Learning Objects. Through web searches and exploration of learning object repositories, students will locate and evaluate free and inexpensive learning objects in a variety of content areas. They will learn to download and insert objects within educational materials such as websites, online courses, or digital tutorials.
Course Goal and Objectives:
¿ Know how to locate and use content-specific learning objects ¿ Know how to evaluate and when to use learning objects ¿ Develop skills for using learning objects in educational activities ¿ Understand the benefits and drawbacks to using reusable content ¿ Understand copyright rules and ethical issues related to the use of content created by others
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
This course will meet elective requirements for the MSED Information Technology program as well as the MAT technology component. The class is aligned with ISTE National Educational Technology Standards and the Framework for 21st Century Learning, which form the framework for the MSEd Information Technology program and underlie the technology requirement for teacher licensure.

The following topics will be covered in this class: ¿ Introduction to learning objects and their role in teaching and learning ¿ Learning object repositories ¿ Locating learning objects on the Web and evaluating them as educational tools ¿ Creating units of instruction that incorporate learning objects ¿ Copyright and fair use¿using content safely, legally, and fairly ¿ Content sharing and open education ¿ Creating original learning objects ¿ Methods for sharing content with the professional community.
