INTRO PROB/STATS

Current Course Description:
Descriptive statistics, discrete and continuous probability models including binomial and normal distributions, sampling distributions; hypothesis testing, point and interval estimation. Does not apply toward a math major/minor. Prerequisite: MTH 111 with grade of C- or better, or satisfactory score on WOU's math placement test.

New Course Description:
Descriptive statistics, discrete and continuous probability models including binomial and normal distributions, sampling distributions; hypothesis testing, point and interval estimation. Does not apply toward a math major/minor. Prerequisite: MTH 111 with minimum grade of C-, or MTH 112 with minimum grade of C-, or MTH 251 with minimum grade of C-, or satisfactory score on WOU's math placement test.

Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
The current prerequisite of MTH 111 creates some issues with transfer students. Many students place above Math 111 at a different institution and take a more advanced class (Math 112 (prereq 111) or Math 251 (prereq 112) ). When they transfer to WOU, the lack of Math 111 on their transcript causes Math 243 registration problems--they must get signed in and some students think they must take Math 111 (a course that they have already mastered the content of). This change should alleviate this problem. Merely writing
Students/Program affected:
Biology, Business, Chemistry, Crime analysis certificate, Earth science, Economics, Information systems. any student using Math 243 for the statistics portion of their B.S. graduation requirement.
