Catalog Description:
This one-credit course explores free and inexpensive tools for creating, editing, and publishing music digitally. Students will create musical pieces and use them in a variety of media such as video, websites, and podcasts. Course includes an exploration of effective ways to incorporate music in the classroom.
Course Goal and Objectives:
¿ Become familiar with music editing programs such as GarageBand and Audacity. ¿ Learn to create original music using loops and voice recording ¿ Locate copyright free music and sounds from the Internet and edit them ¿ Create soundtracks appropriate for a variety of educational purposes
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
This course will meet elective requirements for the MSED Information Technology program as well as the MAT technology component. The class is aligned with ISTE National Educational Technology Standards and the Framework for 21st Century Learning, which form the framework for the MSEd Information Technology program and underlie the technology requirement for teacher licensure.

The following topics will be covered in this class: ¿ Introduction to GarageBand ¿ Using loops to create multi-track compositions ¿ Introduction to melodic and harmonic components ¿ Locating music and sound effects online ¿ Importing audio files into Audacity and exploring editing and effects capabilities ¿ Creating multi-track musical compositions in Audacity ¿ Transitions, samples, cross-fades, panning, and volume mixing ¿ Creating voice tracks ¿ Creating educational materials with original soundtracks
