Course Prefix&Number Descriptive Title Credits/Hours
A418 Gallery Exhibition 1 - 4

Abbreviation for Class Schedule(20 spaces)
Gallery Exhibition
Catalog Description:
A survey of professional exhibition practice. Capstone art exhibition experience includes preparation for and installation of an exhibition of each student¿s artwork. Artist statements, artist websites, documentation, marketing, and professional ethics will be covered. One credit is required for the art major. May be repeated for elective credit. Prerequisites: A119, A318, upper division standing.
Course Goal and Objectives:
This course will be the capstone exhibition experience for art majors. The exhibition component from A498 (which is becoming A419) will be moved into this course. Students will prepare, market and install an exhibition of their strongest work created as an art major at WOU. This class will utilize skills and experience learned in A318, and apply it to an exhibition of their own work. Students will also draft and edit an artist statement to accompany the exhibition as well as design a website showcasing their artwork. Professional contracts, pricing of artwork and ethics are also covered. Guest speakers will visit the class to discuss gallery relations, along with other relevant topics. Goals and Objectives: ¿ To demonstrate experience documenting, preparing and hanging artwork ¿ To apply experience with planning exhibition placement, hanging, signage, and identification tags ¿ To practice curatorial skills and apply to own work ¿ To apply knowledge of legal aspects of gallery management: ethics, contracts, artist/gallery relations ¿ To learn marketing skills relevant to professional artists ¿ To learn about and create an artist¿s website ¿ To practice articulating artist¿s intentions in writing and editing an artist statement.
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
This new proposal is part of a larger reorganization process to shift all studio art courses from 3 credits to 4 credits. This change will enable students to complete the program efficiently in a four-year degree plan. As a result, the reduced course load will allow students to invest more time per course and increase the potential for greater progress in each subject. This change will also ease the department¿s scheduling grid, and permit increased student access to studio equipment and workspace as students prepare artwork between class sessions. This change in credits will align our program with art programs in both the 4-year universities and 2-year community colleges in Oregon. Students transferring from quarter and/or semester academic programs will typically experience more accurate credit equivalencies with WOU art courses under this proposed system. A 498 (which will become A419) was previously considered to be very ¿heavy¿ for 2 credits; course evaluations have documented complaints for the amount of material required for 2 credits. The art department decided to create a two-term gallery sequence (A318 and A418). Art majors will have four credits of capstone experience covered in A318, A418, and A419.
Faculty and facilities needed:
No additional faculty and facilities are needed to teach this course. A398 (which will become A318) is currently offered two to three terms in an academic year. Now A318 will only be offered winter term, and A418 will be offered spring term. Instead of repeating duplicate material, this course will become a two-term sequence.
