New Course Description: A survey of professional practice in the visual arts. Study and preparation for ¿going public.¿ Art positions, portfolios, and career preparation. Capstone art experience includes written materials specific to the art profession and an oral presentation of each student¿s artwork. Prerequisites: A119, A318, upper-division standing; must take A418 concurrently. |
Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): The course number is changing to ¿clean up¿ our numbering system. Courses in the A X90¿s are dedicated to sculpture courses, and courses in the teens are more appropriate for foundation, practicum, gallery and capstone courses. The credit load for this course will remain the same. However, some content is shifting in the class. The content included in this course has historically been considered to be very ¿heavy¿ for 2 credits; course evaluations have documented complaints for the amount of material required for 2 credits. Gallery related material for the course will be shifted into a new 1-credit capstone course (A 418), that must be taken concurrent to this one. It is important to keep the gallery portion separate, so that our gallery director can teach the 1-credit gallery portion of the capstone experience. In addition to the heavy writing load for this course, A419 will focus on career preparation: resumes, cover letters, marketing, portfolio preparation, interviewing skills, budgeting and taxes for artists, and a final public portfolio presentation. The course also invites regional guest professionals to discuss their roles and field student questions. |
Students/Program affected: Art major, BFA in Art. |
