Current Course Description:
On-the-job experience for art and graphic design students. Formal requests must be submitted to the Art Department faculty no later than four weeks preceding the term of enrollment. May be repeated for up to six credits. Eligible for the RP grade option. Prerequisites: upper-division standing; graphic design students: A322.

New Course Description:
Practical work experience credit that may be used in the BA/BS degrees in Art or Visual Communication Design, or in the BFA as service learning. For BFA service learning, the practicum should take place off-campus in an arts or cultural organization. Examples include (but not limited to) the Oregon Arts Commission, Oregon Cultural Trust and the Salem Art Association. Students will be contracted for 30 hours per credit. The student will perform duties outlined by the workplace mentor or supervisor to complete an assigned task or project. Eligible for the RP grade option. May be repeated for credit. Prerequisite: upper-division standing.

Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
Currently, there are three courses associated with Practicum/ Service Learning Experience. A412: Practicum, A485 Art Service Learning, and A486 Art Service Learning. The Art Department can serve student¿s needs by only offering one course, with a wider credit range, and the option to repeat the course for credit. Courses in the A X80¿s are dedicated to painting courses, and courses in the teens are more appropriate for foundation, practicum, gallery and capstone courses. The description of A412 is changing to fit the needs of students previously enrolled in A485 and A486. BFA students are required to take 3 credits total in A412 and/or A413 International Studio Art Study (Previously students took A485, A486 for service learning and A487, A488 for International Studio Art.)
Students/Program affected:
BA/BS students in Art and Visual Communication Design degree programs, BFA students in Art.
