Catalog Description:
Focuses on uses of wikis as collaboration tools. Explores methods for using wikis to teach collaboration skills in the classroom, for promoting collaboration in online classes, and for participating in professional collaborations. Develops skills for creating and maintaining educational wikis.
Course Goal and Objectives:
¿ Become familiar with a variety of free and inexpensive tools for creating wikis ¿ Develop skills for creating and managing educational wikis ¿ Learn skills for promoting digital citizenship ¿ Design meaningful, age-appropriate, educational collaboration activities ¿ Contribute to the professional knowledge base by participating in a content-related wiki ¿ Become familiar with and develop a stance on the benefits and drawbacks related to collective knowledge-building
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
This course will meet elective requirements for the MSED Information Technology program as well as the MAT technology component. The class is aligned with ISTE National Educational Technology Standards and the Framework for 21st Century Learning, which form the framework for the MSEd Information Technology program and underlie the technology requirement for teacher licensure.

¿ Introduction to free and inexpensive collaboration tools ¿ Creating a simple wiki ¿ Creating and linking to multiple pages in wikis ¿ Skills for organizing content within a wiki and managing multiple users ¿ Uses for and benefits of the revision history ¿ Adjusting settings to promote safe use and effective collaboration ¿ Digital citizenship¿teaching safe-use skills ¿ Designing meaningful, age-appropriate collaboration activities that teach specific skills ¿ Managing a wiki in the classroom¿participation and grading ¿ Locating wikis within specific content areas and participating in professional collaboration¿contributing to the professional knowledge base ¿ The Wikipedia controversy¿exploring drawbacks and benefits to collective knowledge-building
