Catalog Description:
This course explores the concept of culture and its manifestation in society, the community and the classroom. It examines the research literature and it provides a theoretical foundation for understanding how cultural groups and students¿ identities affect the educational process and the classroom climate. Strategies to maximize learning using cultural and community resources, as well as to build partnerships with families, are addressed. A unique component of the course is that students participate in relevant experiences in an international context that enhance the curriculum and provide an intensive cultural component. Practicing teachers, as well as those preparing to become teachers, develop a level of cultural, linguistic, and historical understanding that is only possible in an immersion experience. Graduate students work on projects that encourage them to become reflective practitioners, as they critique and analyze their own beliefs and teaching practices, and plan their professional growth.
Course Goal and Objectives:
1. Investigate one¿s own culture, students¿ cultures, and the culture of schools in the United States while learning about the cultures of Argentina 2. To understand how one¿s own cultural lens influences one¿s interpretations and worldview 3. Build awareness about the effects of stereotypes, individual/institutional racism, and linguicism (e.g., discrimination of indigenous people and immigrants in Argentina, and English language learners in the U.S) 4. Examine the interrelatedness between language and culture, and explore the influence of culture on students' learning process and academic achievement 5. Implement practices that foster a classroom climate inclusive of all diversity, such as linguistic background, national origin, socioeconomic status, race, religion, ability, and gender 6. Gain exposure to and employ culturally-responsive practices that build strong partnerships between families, schools and communities
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
This course is part of the Northwest Council on Study Abroad (NCSA) and AHA International (University of Oregon) ESOL program in Rosario, Argentina, and was offered for the first time in this location during summer 2011 (with a temporary course approval). The course is open to any eligible undergraduate or graduate student at a NCSA university. The NCSA universities go through their respective approval processes and each grants credit to its own students who are enrolled in the program. This course approval request is for WOU students enrolled in the program. The attached syllabus differentiates between graduate and undergraduate requirements. A unique component of the course is that students participate in relevant on-site field trips that enhance the curriculum and provide an intensive cultural component. Practicing teachers, as well as those preparing to become teachers, develop a level of cultural, linguistic, and historical understanding that is only possible in an immersion experience.
Faculty and facilities needed:
Guest faculty (from one of the NCSA programs)and facilities in the Latin American site are provided by AHA International each summer.
