Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
An issue arose as students went to register for this course (offered Winter term, annually). For the Winter of 2012 we added pre-requisites (ASL 8 and Introduction to Interpreting). Unfortunately, this eliminated the eligibility of transfer students who were already accepted into our interpreting program, as well as Deaf students who may not have taken ASL 8 as they are native users of the language. Additionally, it was set up to be a co-occurring pre-requisite, wherein students could be enrolled in ASL 8 and Deaf-Blind Interpreting at the same time, but Introduction to Interpreting is only offered fall and spring--further limiting the access some students would have in their ability to register for the course. We would like to have it state: Pre-requisite: Introduction to Interpreting. Co-occurring: ASL 8, or by instructor approval. I hope that clarifies it!
Students/Program affected:
Deaf students who may not need to take ASL Transfer students who may have taken Intro to Interpreting at another institution Students who have already taken ASL 8
