MUS 422/522 Media Music Production II 3 -

Abbreviation for Class Schedule(20 spaces)
Media Music Prod II

Current Course Description:
Introduces students to theory and practices of digital synthesis and digital signal processing for applications in computer music, digital audio production, and multimedia. Using GUI software and object oriented programming languages, students learn basic programming techniques as they apply it to new computer-based technologies of music and audio production. Students participate in classroom activities and complete assigned work during lab time in the WOU Digital Audio Production Studio and MIDI lab. Prerequisite: MUS 421

New Course Description:
Composing music for film and media with emphasis on history, dramatic conceptualization, orchestration, styles, and genres. Underscoring projects will be performed, recorded, produced and critiqued. Includes weekly midi lab times for scoring productions, composition, and transcriptions. This course may be used to satisfy 3 credit hours of the 2nd-year (undergraduate) theory requirement. Prerequisite: MUS 421 (undergraduates); 521 (graduates) or by consent of the instructor.

Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
With the addition of an audio production faculty member (Dr. Dirk Freymuth) in the Music Department, the audio production components of the Electronic Music sequence (MUS 420/520-422/522) have been shifted over to the new Audio Production courses taught by Dr. Freymuth. The Electronic Music sequence, taught by Dr. Walczyk, will be re-designed to focus specifically on Media Music Production that will include the existing MUS 423 ¿ Scoring for Film and Television course. Offering sequences in Audio Production and Media Music Production will more aptly address trends in today's music industry and serve to attract a broader base of student clientele to WOU's Contemporary Music degree program.
Students/Program affected:
This course may be applied as an upper-division elective or theory elective for undergraduate music majors, as well as an elective for graduate music majors. Course content has been re-distributed between two different course sequences (audio production and media production). Course content, therefore, will still be available, and will have no affect on students or degree programs in Music.
