New Course Description: Traditional and contemporary orchestration and Instrumentation techniques for string instruments. Emphasis on range, transposition, idiomatic solo writing, idiomatic ensemble writing, and standard practices for various ensembles and genres. Student projects will be performed and critiqued. Prerequisite: MUS 213 or consent of instructor. |
Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): Currently, Orchestration II (MUS 372) serves as the 2nd term of a two-term sequence and includes both the string family of instruments and the percussion family of instruments. The 10-week format does not allow for adequate coverage for these two instrument families. With the addition of a third term of orchestration, study of the percussion family will be moved from the second term (MUS 372) to the third term (MUS 373) where it can be given the necessary time for proper coverage. Similarly, the string family requires more time to cover properly so that attention to string bowings - and the addition of the harp and piano (not covered in the current two-term sequence), can be included. The primary topic of Orchestration II will, therefore, cover the entire string family. |
Students/Program affected: Adding MUS 373 provides undergraduate music majors with an upper-division elective in their major. The program is not affected. |
