First term offered : Fall 2013
Course Prefix&Number Descriptive Title Credits/Hours
MUS 650 Concert Attendance 0 - 0

Abbreviation for Class Schedule(20 spaces)
Concert Attendance
Catalog Description:
Concert attendance for graduate music majors. Available as a P/NC grading option only. May be repeated for credit.
Course Goal and Objectives:
Concert attendance is designed to facilitate the graduate music majors¿ listening experience by attending a required amount of live concerts in various venues on and off campus and serving to expose students to an eclectic variety of listening opportunities. The student will... - Attend 12 department-approved concerts over the course of the term. - Demonstrate their active engagement as listeners by completing a concert summary for each required concert. - Attend concerts of various genres and styles that will broaden the student¿s understanding of repertoire.
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
The listening (concert attendance) component is a vital aspect of WOU's BM degree in contemporary music (MUS 250) and must be an added component to the MM program. Without the MUS 650 course, MM candidates are not fulfilling this vital component of their education and are academically achieving less than their undergraduate counterparts.
Faculty and facilities needed:
No additional faculty or facilities are required.
Brief Course outline:
The concert attendance requirement (MUS 650) is not gained via a traditional classroom-based format. Students are required to attend, on their own volition, no less than 12 pre-approved concerts during the term that they are enrolled. Students prepare concert summaries and obtain programs for each concert. These materials are then submitted by the end of week 10 of the term. Students who successfully prepare and submit materials in a timely fashion will receive a grade of PASS. Students who fail to attend the required 12 concerts, fail to submit the proper number of concert summaries, or fail to submit the materials by the end of week 10 will receive a grade of NO CREDIT.
