Mth 416 | Complex Analysis | 4 - |
Abbreviation for Class Schedule(20 spaces) Complex Analysis |
Current Course Description: The analysis of functions of a single complex variable. Conformal mappings, Cauchy¿s Theorem, Cauchy¿s Integral Formula, power series expansions of analytic functions. Prerequisite: MTH 312 with a grade of C- or better |
New Course Description: The analysis of functions of a single complex variable. Conformal mappings, Cauchy¿s Theorem, Cauchy¿s Integral Formula, power series expansions of analytic functions. Prerequisite: MTH 344 with a grade of C- or better, or consent of instructor. |
Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): The course content of Mth 416 requires sufficiently little of the content of the current prerequisite (Mth 312), that Mth 416 may successfully be taken by students with mathematical maturity typically acquired by the middle of the junior year, after at least one proof-intensive course beyond Mth 280 is successfully completed. Mth 344 is typically taken by juniors in their second term, and will serve as an excellent (though not exclusive) benchmark regarding a student's ability to assimilate the material in Mth 416. The Mth 312 content necessary for successful navigation of Mth 416 can be integrated into the existing Mth 416 course structure in a way that results in only marginal change in the scope of Mth 416. Further, exposure to the material and techniques in Complex Analysis is indispensable for those students who wish to attend graduate school in Mathematics. Currently Mth 416 is offered once every two years, and the unnecessary prerequisite of Mth 312 (which is typically taken in the Winter Term of the senior year), effectively eliminates Mth 416 from consideration as an elective for students not taking 312 in the same year in which Mth 416 is offered (approximately half of our graduating seniors, year-over-year). This prerequisite change would ensure that all qualified students would have the opportunity to take Mth 416 prior to graduation. |
