Catalog Description:
This course utilizes the creative arts (art, music, and dramatic play) and play as central approaches to teaching and learning with young children from birth-4th grade in inclusive early childhood settings. The course focuses on an integrated approach to an arts-based curriculum by examining authentic arts experiences and the role of play in children's growth and development.
Course Goal and Objectives:
Students will be able to: 1. develop an understanding of the nature and function of play, the expressive arts, and creative thinking for young children in the inclusive environment. 2. explain and apply theoretical bases of play, the expressive arts, and creative thinking. 3. observe, facilitate, interpret, and utilize children's play, expressive activities, and creative thinking. 4. address the needs of individual students with particular emphasis on working with diverse learners. 5. assess and design creative, appropriate environments and learning activities for all children. 6. utilize play, the arts, and creative thinking as integral components of the total curriculum. 7. identify themselves with the early childhood profession and will exhibit the attributes of a collaborative educational leader including the acquisition of appropriate knowledge, skills, and dispositions. This course is part of a program revision (Early Childhood teaching authorization) and the proposed Early Childhood Studies major.

This course will be taught by current faculty and/or adjuncts who are specialists in the field.
