Catalog Description:
This course offers an in-depth exploration of play and literacy as integral components of early learning. Emphasis is placed on the roles of the teacher in observing play and literacy, developing and refining teaching strategies that support and extend children's play and literacy, and advocating for play in the early childhood curriculum. This courses focuses on young children ages birth-4th grade in inclusive early childhood settings. In addition to in class work, students will be spending time out in the field in inclusive environments.
Course Goal and Objectives:
Students will be able to: 1. will understand the significance of play throughout the life span, in particular for early childhood (birth-4th grade). 2. will understand and articulate principled theories regarding play, literacy, and development. 3. develop a rational for encouraging play and literacy in inclusive early childhood settings. 4. demonstrate an understanding of developmentally appropriate practices around play and literacy for young children at home, and in early childhood group settings. 5. advocate for play-centered learning opportunities for young children based on an understanding of play's significance in development. 6. examine the need humans have to play and our own personal connections with play and literacy while at the same time developing a sensitivity for cultural differences in the same. Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
This course is part of the revision of the Early Childhood teaching authorization and the proposed Early Childhood Studies major.

This course will be taught by faculty and/or adjuncts who are specialists in the field.
