Catalog Description: This course focuses on the study and practice of science and social studies education and exploration for young children in inclusive early childhood settings (birth-4th grade), focusing on appropriate content, goals, and methods. Students will have the opportunity to design, plan, and implement lesson plans in early childhood settings. |
Course Goal and Objectives: Students will be able to: 1. demonstrate the process approach to science emphasizing the basic process skills, e.g., observing, predicting, classifying, and collecting data. 2. identify organizations that promote science and social studies education to young children (birth-4th grade), e.g. The National Science Teachers Association, The National Council for Social Studies, etc.). 3. describe how the developmental characteristics of young children affect the teaching of science and social studies. 4. implement a program which capitalizes on children's natural curiosity and wonder as it relates to real world experiences. 5. critically critique science and social studies textbook programs on the appropriateness of content, readability and instructional approaches. 6. demonstrate various models for teaching science, e.g. discovery, inquiry, nature study, and experimental. 7. demonstrate various techniques for teaching social studies, e.g., teaching social studies through literacy, research and documentary studies, democratic classrooms, and arts integration. 8. prepare activity-based lessons appropriate for young children in inclusive early childhood settings. 9. examine goals for science and social studies education developed by state and national organizations. 10. plan and conduct developmentally appropriate and culturally relevant assessment of science and social studies instruction and learning. 11. design lessons which integrate science and social studies into other curriculum areas, while including technology. 12. continue to identify themselves with the early childhood profession and will exhibit the attributes of a collaborative educational leader including the acquisition of appropriate knowledge, skills, and dispositions.
