In addition to completing the ED 481 course requirements, graduate students in the ED 581 course will be required to complete the following: ¿ Additional assignment for graduate students: Conduct an in-depth case study of an English language learner in the current field placement. The case study will be based on class observations, individual work with the student, and interviews with the classroom teacher. Provide an analysis of the learner¿s cultural background, linguistic abilities, special needs and other factors that influence learning. Make recommendations for instruction. The final paper will include a critical analysis of sources from the professional and theoretical literature, and will relate the findings of the case study to this analysis ¿ Additional readings and group discussion, with particular emphasis on developing a more sophisticated understanding of the course content, outcomes and pedagogies ¿ Graduate student discussion and writing will be assessed at a higher level of sophistication, argument, evidence, and conclusions than discussion and writing at the undergraduate level ¿ Graduate students will have the opportunity to mentor undergraduate students by leading discussion and teaching small mini-lessons

Current Course Description:
Methodology in the development of English skills in limited English proficiency students will be the main focus, with an emphasis on speaking and listening. Various approaches and techniques for second language teaching will be explored.

New Course Description:
This course provides an introduction to the field of ESOL and bilingual education. In addition to offering an overview of the principles of second language acquisition, this course explores classroom practices that allow English language learners at different proficiency levels to access grade-level content while developing skills in academic and social language. (see attached syllabus)
