In addition to completing the ED 448 course requirements, graduate students in the ED 548 course will be required to complete the following: ¿ Additional assignment for graduate students ¿ Conduct an in-depth evaluation of an early childhood curriculum currently being used in a school. Graduate students will interview at least 3 teachers in different grades (preK-4th grade) who are using the curriculum, research theory and background of curriculum, and evaluate the curriculum based on current theory, relevance to culture, disability, race, and gender. Make recommendations for instruction. The final paper will include a critical analysis of sources from the professional and theoretical literature, interview data, and recommendations for adoption/rejection of curriculum. In addition to the final paper, graduate students will present their results to the class in a poster session. ¿ Additional readings and group discussion, with particular emphasis on developing a more sophisticated understanding of the course content, outcomes and pedagogies ¿ Graduate student discussion and writing will be assessed at a higher level of sophistication, argument, evidence, and conclusions than discussion and writing at the undergraduate level ¿ Graduate students will have the opportunity to mentor undergraduate students by leading discussion and teaching small mini-lessons

Current Course Description:
Exploration of the unique approach necessary to successfully teach children aged 3-8. Emphasis will be on matching teaching to the learning abilities of the young children, including non-English speakers.

New Course Description:
This course emphasizes planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating programs for young children with diverse learning needs ages birth-4th grade within the framework of developmentally appropriate practices for young children in inclusive settings. Students will explore, plan, and implement curriculum and environments using individually responsive, developmentally, and culturally appropriate methods and materials. (See attached syllabus)

Revision of Early Childhood teaching authorization and creation of Early Childhood Studies major.
Students/Program affected:
Early Childhood Studies major, Early Childhood teaching authorization, MAT students interested in early childhood.
