Catalog Description:
Measurement theory, observation, screening and assessment practices, familiarization with selected instruments, legal and ethical guidelines for assessing young children ages birth through 4th grade in inclusive settings will be addressed in this course. Assignments within this course will be tied to student teaching experiences.
Course Goal and Objectives:
Students will be able to: 1. demonstrate understanding of the rights and responsibilities of parents, students, , teachers and schools as they relate to young children receiving free and appropriate public education. 2. demonstrate knowledge and understanding of formal and informal assessment strategies to evaluate and ensure the continuous intellectual, social, and physical development of the child. 3. articulate an understanding of comprehensive and unbiased assessments of young children ages birth-4th grade in inclusive settings. 4. demonstrate an understanding of the influence of cultural and linguistic diversity on assessment, eligibility, programming and LRE placement. 5. identify how to establish case records including how to write appropriate IFSP/IEP's, transition plans, and evaluation summary reports. 6. demonstrate an ability to adapt and modify existing assessment tools and methods to accommodate the unique abilities and needs of young children of all abilities, as well as those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. 7. demonstrate the ability to design individual plans that integrate assessment results, family priorities, resources and concerns; and that incorporate developmentally appropriate goals/outcomes, and the appropriate use of adaptive, augmentative and assistive technology. 8. continue to identify themselves with the early childhood profession and will exhibit the attributes of a collaborative educational leader including the acquisition of appropriate knowledge, skills, and dispositions. Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
This new course will be offered as part of the new Early Childhood Studies major, the revised Early Childhood teaching authorization, and as an option for interested graduate students in the MAT program.
Faculty and facilities needed:
This course will be taught by faculty and/or adjuncts who are specialists in the field. No new facility needs are anticipated
