Catalog Description: Focuses on methods and materials in teaching and assessment in early childhood numeracy and mathematics. Methods for facilitating early math learning using developmentally appropriate practices for learners of all abilities (birth-8 years) will be discussed. Interactions with young children in inclusive settings will provide experiential learning and teaching opportunities in student teaching. |
Course Goal and Objectives: Students will be able to: 1. describe research and theory around the development of children's number sense and ability to construct mathematical knowledge. 2. identify cultural and other factors that influence development of mathematical thinking and skills recognizing the vary strengths supported by different cultures. 3. design and conduct assessment of a child's development of understanding and skills in particular areas of mathematics that reflect an understanding of theory, culture, and the needs of individual children of all abilities within the inclusive setting. 4. describe essential elements of state and national standards in preK-4th grade mathematics education. 5. demonstrate competence in a variety of areas within mathematics such as applied problem solving, geometry and spatial skills, probability and statistics, and measurement. 6. analyze characteristics of effective mathematics lessons and activities for young children in inclusive environments. 7. plan and implement a variety of culturally and developmentally appropriate learning experiences that support young children in constructing math knowledge with appropriate attention to the needs and difference of all children. 8. identify and review professional materials that assist the teacher in planning instructional experiences in math (websites, technology, videos, manuals, etc.). 9. analyze the selection of content, materials, and teaching approaches as they relate to physical, intellectual, and emotional differences, and issues of diversity. 10. continue to identify themselves with the early childhood profession and will exhibit the attributes of a collaborative educational leader including the acquisition of appropriate knowledge, skills, and dispositions.
