WR 230W Introduction to Writing Studies 4 -

Abbreviation for Class Schedule(20 spaces)
Writing Studies

Current Course Description:
A broad introduction to the field of rhetoric and composition, with emphasis on its historical, theoretical and practical development. Prerequisites: WR 135 or equivalent.

New Course Description:
An introduction to composition theory and upper-division writing concentrations: composition and rhetoric, creative writing, and professional writing. The course includes the development of a digital portfolio for archiving written artifacts. Prerequisite: WR 135 or equivalent.

Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
WR 230W is the only writing requirement in the English core. The course was originally created in 2009 as a rhetoric and writing theory course. With projected changes to the writing track, the course has been redesigned to introduce students to the range of writing theories and processes that are, and will be, included in upper-division writing courses. Additionally, an introduction to the senior portfolio has been embedded into the course to ensure portfolio preparation consistency across the major. The new title reflects the change in the course content.
Students/Program affected:
English majors and minors only.
