Songwriting II
Catalog Description:
Continuation of Songwriting I. Model songwriters include Antonio Carlos Jobim and at least one 21st-Century artist.
Course Goal and Objectives:
Understand basic principles of lyric writing. Ability to set a text to an appropriate rhythm. Familiarity with a range of songwriting styles. Ability to employ modern songwriting techniques. Understand and be able to apply relevant analytic techniques. Ability to write songs in various styles.
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
With the change in the Theory curriculum to an slate of options for the second year, Songwriting (now to be named "Songwriting I") has proven to be an attractive option for students. With a two-term sequence, students will be able to write more, delve deeper into analytic techniques, and study an expanded range of model songwriters. When the course was a single term, the only text used was one focusing on musical techniques. With the proposed two-term structure, students will also study a text that focuses on lyric writing techniques.
Faculty and facilities needed:
courseload shift from a less well-enrolled elective.
Brief Course outline:
Study of model songwriters, including the towering figure of Brazilian popular music, Antonio Carlos Jobim, as well as at least one 21st-Century songwriter such as John Mayer or Sara Bareilles. Composition of 5 songs, both lyrics and music, over the course of the term.
