Catalog Description:
This course will focus on older persons in social contexts. We will examine: historical perspectives; demographic trends; theoretical frameworks and research methods; intimate relationships; intergenerational relationships; and life course transitions. Students will participate in a service-learning project that complements course content.
Course Goal and Objectives:
This course will focus on older persons in social contexts. Students will: ¿Understand characteristics and processes of social ties in middle and later life ¿Understand family changes that occur with development in middle and later life ¿Recognize diversity in individual, family, and community contexts as shaped by gender, race or ethnicity, social class, and sexual orientation ¿Engage in a service learning project ¿Learn and apply basic qualitative research methods ¿Apply concepts and methods learned in class to the life experience of individuals in families at middle and later life
Justification for adding the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
This course will provide context for the social ties of older adults which is currently missing from our curriculum. This was one of three courses missing from our curriculum as evaluated against Program of Merit Accreditation standards as established by the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education (AGHE).

Students will learn about the following topics while addressing the life course transitions that mid to later life adults encounter as well as individual/family/community responses and contexts. ¿Introduction to Social Ties and Aging ¿Social Contexts and Theoretical Foundations ¿Intimate Ties in Later Life ¿Widow(er)hood ¿Intergenerational Relations/Parent-Adult Child Relationships ¿Support Exchanges/Caregiving ¿Grandparenting/Grandparents Raising Grandchildren ¿Sibling Relationships ¿Childless Older Adults ¿Elder Abuse and Neglect/Policy and Current Issues
