BI 370 | Humans and the Environment | 4 - |
Abbreviation for Class Schedule(20 spaces) Humans & Environment |
Current Course Description: The study of how humans interact with their environment and the effect of the environment on human society. Topics include basic ecological principals, human population growth, environmental health, air and water pollution, ecosystem change and global impacts. Does not substitute for BI 357 in the biology major program. Three hours lecture and one three-hour laboratory including field work. Prerequisite: BI 101 or equivalent. |
New Course Description: The study of how humans interact with their environment and the effect of the environment on human society. Topics include basic ecological principles, human population growth, environmental health, pollution, toxicology, agriculture, forest management and global climate change. BI 370 is designed for Human Biology and Environmental Studies Minors and as an elective for non-science majors - Not open for credit to Biology Majors or Biology Minors. Three hours of lecture and one three-hour laboratory including field work. Prerequisite: BI 101 or BI 102 or BI 211, or consent of instructor; MTH 095 with grade of C- or better, or equivalent highly recommended. |
Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.): The title change better reflects the anthropogenic focus of this revised and updated course. The new description is necessary to make it clear that this course is not appropriate for biology majors or minors ¿ these students take BI 357, General Ecology, which goes MORE IN-DEPTH than Humans and the Environment. This added language is very similar to the current course description for BI 318, Microbiology for the Health Sciences, a course designed specifically for non-biology majors. This course change involves no new FTE or space requests. |
Students/Program affected: This change will prevent students who are Biology Majors or Biology Minors at WOU from taking BI 370 for credit. However, these changes will benefit both Environmental Science minors and Human Biology minors. |
