To:
Course Prefix & Number Descriptive Title Credits/Hours
BI 441/541 Human Heredity 4 -

Abbreviation for Class Schedule(20 spaces)
Human Heredity

Current Course Description:
Basic principles of inheritance, including Mendelian patterns of traits, chromosomal aberrations, sex determination, molecular biology, and genetic diagnostics, as it relates to humans. The course is designed for non-biology majors. Four hours of lecture per week. Prerequisites: BI 102 or BI 211, or consent of instructor.

New Course Description:
Basic principles of inheritance, including Mendelian patterns of traits, chromosomal aberrations, sex determination, molecular biology, and genetic diagnostics, as it relates to humans. BI 441 is designed for Human Biology Minors - Not open for credit to Biology Majors or Biology Minors. BI 541 is designed for graduate students in education or related fields. Four hours of lecture per week. Prerequisites: BI 102 or BI 211, or consent of instructor; MTH 095 with grade of C- or better, or equivalent highly recommended.

Justification for changing the course (e.g. alignment with other institutions, program revision, etc.):
The new description is necessary to make it clear that this course is not appropriate for biology majors or minors ¿ these students take BI 314, Introductory Genetics, which goes MORE IN-DEPTH than Human Heredity. This added language is very similar to the current course description for BI 318, Microbiology for the Health Sciences, a course designed specifically for non-biology majors. This course change involves no new FTE or space requests. Graduate Credit Criterion: Students enrolled in BI 541 will have the same criteria as BI441 students, with the addition of two papers on literature search topics within the course purview.
Students/Program affected:
This change will prevent students who are Biology Majors or Biology Minors at WOU from taking BI 441 for credit.
